NATS 3200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Beringia, Syphilis, Globus Pallidus
Document Summary
Epidemic pattern an unusual increase in the number of cases of a disease in a community. Small number of cases at first, followed by rapid, increase and spread the # of cases usually declines quite fast as the number of vulnerable individuals declines (previously affected individuals either die or recover and acquire immunity) Pandemic - a particularly large and widespread epidemic, involving more than one continent at the same time. Epidemics and pandemics take place in large populations, where many individuals live in close proximity to one another. The establishment of settled human societies, based on the development of agriculture, created suitable conditions for human epidemics. Large, sedentary populations = sewage accumulates = contamination of water supply. Forests cleared for agriculture = standing pools of water = higher # of mosquitoes which transmit malaria. Use of human and animal feces as fertilizers. Humans living in close proximity to large number of domestic animals.
