Metaphysics the study of reality in the broadest sense: meta = after, beyond, ontology; ontos = being. Analytic philosophy: odd distinction (criterion: geography vs a method, but the labels had stuck with us. Sartre, derrida, foucault, lacan, deleuze, butler, baudrillard: currents: phenomenology, existentialism, post structuralism, deconstruction, psychoanalysis, hermeneutics, marxism. Rejection of science as the only/must accurate way of understanding natural phenomena: knowledge, experience and reality are to be understood by pure thinking (armchair) rather than mainly through science. Tends towards historicism: engagement with practice (personal, political, cultural activism) Mar(cid:454): (cid:862)philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways,; the point, ho(cid:449)e(cid:448)er, is to (cid:272)ha(cid:374)ge it(cid:863) Themes: human condition, history, culture, binaries: male/female, social themes. Style: closer to literature, ornated, metaphors, sometimes (often obscure, impenetrable. Philosophy should apply logical techniques in order to attain conceptual clarity, and that the philosophy should be consistent with the success of modern science. Exponents: frege, russell, wittgenstein, carnap (vienna circle), quine, dennett.
