Document Summary
Read marx for next week (pgs 139-153) Freud and other philosophers have read rousseau. Rousseau believes that a lot of problems that we have are to be put on the door of culture and society. He doesn"t see culture as necessarily a good thing. He believes it to be distorting, and producing in us an unnatural outgrowth. Rousseau says that when we"re in a society, we start to become psychically distorted. Rousseau says that a lot of the problems exist because we live in societies. Rousseau says that in a state of nature, your natural self finds fulfillment. Rousseau puts value in the natural state. He considers society to take away our freedom, and natural self. Even though we believe we are free, we are free in an extremely limited way. We have pressures from our loved ones, our families, from our relationships, if we"re not in a relationship then the pressure to be in one.
