Lecture 2 - polis as a way of life. Autonomy, auto - > self, nomos -> law; giving yourself rules to live by. Greece in the 5th & 4th century bce: polis not a city, much more than a state; city states = clumsy translation, in accurate, athenian were extremely important for the world. Invention of democracy, rise of an intense and rich political life based upon city state. Origins: aristocratic reforms democratic: explain greek miracle, extremely sophisticated. Geographical, climatic, well situated, mountainous, islands, seaports navigation commerce, trade, war interaction with other civilizations. Inventive, curious about self & others & meaning of things. Define oneself as distinct human being, have to part-take in public affairs; being political expressing who you were. Polis becomes collective expression of citizens" views on political life. Polis cannot its identity on citizens, because of interaction btwn citizens and polis.
