First experience of democracy - athens - in context of greek civilization - 5th and 4th century. B. c. e. extremely important - birth of democracy and rise of a political community (known later on as the city-state) Begins as an aristocracy - slowly develops into a democracy. Polis - ancient greek term - better way to describe athens. Athens will provide western world with democracy, architecture, drama - greek miracle . Geographic and climactic reasons - greece is well situated in middle of mediterranean sea - navigation, commerce, trade, war - athenians were interacting with other civilizations. Ancient greek character - inventive, curious, level of re exivity. With greeks, impartiality comes into the world - impartial, openminded approach to non- Innate sense of the importance in politics. The polis was the natural human habitat, and politics was a normal way of life - an existence devoid of politics cannot be a truly human existence.
