Lecture #1, introduction: who are the greeks and why are they important, the greeks were never united. They were separated by kingdoms and cities (more specifically city states). They were at war amongst themselves (ex: sparta vs. athens). Their civilization lasted about a century and a half: they had a strong belief in political independence and freedom. They had a huge effect on western civilization: they believed in the nobility of human achievement and were very proud. They also believed in the human condition and the human spirit. They put more value in knowledge than faith: they inquired in the causes of war, morality, mortality and fate, the bronze age: The minoans were situated in the island of crete (minoan civilization). They were named after the legendary crete ruler named minos. The other great civilizations that are located on the mainland were the mycenes. Minoans: knew very little until the 19th century by schliemann and arthur evans.
