POLS 4212 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Just War Theory, Conventional Warfare, Asymmetric Warfare
Document Summary
We"ve been contrasting the war on terrorism in conventional war and we"ve been doing that in terms of just war theory. It is nice grounding for us, because it is an ethical doctrine and it is also put into practice in a lot of international agreements in international law. Assassination doesn"t bring the same emotional response as torture. It"s always been considered illegitimate, even in times of war. It is in times of war that we are concerned with in this lecture, not assassination in times of peace. Assassination in times of peace, is still an interesting moral problem but it"s ethical condemnation is more easily understood than in times of war. In times of peace and in times of war, it is exceedingly problematic. It is there with torture but it doesn"t elicit the same type of emotional response when it comes to opponents of torture.
