When the arousal is too low or too high, we"re not valid to attain on optimal level of arousal. There is a strong genetic predisposition to high/low sensation - seeking. High sensation - seekers tend to have a low resting level of arousal (like extraverts) Characteristics of high s. s: thrill + adventure seeking, experience seeking, not inhibited, susceptibility to boredom (tolerate stress) Conflict - exists when a person has 2 or more competing motives. 2 incompatible responses exist simultaneously but both cannot be satisfied. Cognitive dissonance - if our attitudes is inconsistent with our behaviour, it creates dissonance. We try to attain consistency by changing our attitude ex: you have a shopping budget of . You want to buy a pair of shoes and a nice watch but can only buy one. You buy the watch and end up feeling sad for not getting the shoes so you try convincing yourself that the shoes were not worth it.
