Nervous system has the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. Peripheral nervous system has the somatic and autonomic nervous systems in it. Somatic is the voluntary, autonomic is involuntary like smooth muscle. Sympathetic division mobilizes resources, and the parasympathetic system conserves resources. Central nervous system is the brain and spinal cord, its responsible for high level integrative functions. Layers as you go up the layers, there is higher cognitive processes. Hindbrain: lowest part, begins at the top of spinal cord brain stem, cerebellum - movement, medulla - basic functions. Forebrain - more sophisticated: hypothalamus - controls ans, pleasure centre, cerebrum/cerebral cortex (outer layers) cerebral cortex, highest level processing, within cortex - localization of function, convolutions/lobes, bilateral symmetry (left/right, two temporal lobes) Right brain: controls the left side of the body, involved in musical appreciation, music appreciation, dance, sculpture, fantasy. Left brain: controls the right side of the body, math, statistics, language, science, logic, writing.
