The structure and operations of the criminal courts______________________________ Points: courts less visible than police, charter creates more work and complex cases. The provincial and territorial court system: provincial territorial courts, different names/close to the same system, lowest level of courts, nearly all criminal cases begin in them, judges appointed by proveniences and territories, judges sit without a jury. Includes: criminal, family court justice act, small claims court, preliminary inquiries/enough evidence to begin a trial, seriousness of offences getting worse, tries the most cases four courts pg 148. If one judge does not agree with the majority the losers may appeal at the federal level. Supreme court of canada: court of last resort, located in ottawa, established under constitution of 1867, 3 judges must be from quebec, decisions are final however supreme court has changed their minds. Federal court has: trial court and court of appeal, hears all cases to do with federal law, copyright law, maritime law.
