Survey method: consists of sets of written questions that are used to determine people’s attitude,
beliefs and behaviors.
Advantages: its anonymous, cheap and fast
Disadvantages: the question has to interoperated in the same way for everyone to get
the same result.
Not everyone will be honest.
its difficult to qualify your answers.
Pilot study: Take a small group of people to have a survey done to be able to further ask and
question their thoughts.
in order to generalize from the sample to the population, the sample must be representative of the
population. (the opposite of representative is biased) your sample must be a mini version of the
Biased sample: to have a survey done on GTA and using the phone book as the source, would not
be a random sampling since a lot f people are not listed in there.
Random sampling: One way to make sure your sample is representative of the pop is to do random
sampling. each person in the population has n equal chance to be picked for the sample.
Naturalistic observation: this method is used when your interested in describing or measuring
people’s behavior as they are naturally behaving in a natural setting.
Advantages: You can generalize to other different settings. Disadvantages: you don’t know the cause of the behavior, you see something but you
cant jump to the conclusion. (kids playing in the playground and throwing kicks around,
u can judge that they are about to fight or that they could simply be showing off the
moves they’ve seen the night before in a kickboxing show.)
You have no control over the situation.
You do not what subject reactivity which refers to the subject reacting to the observation you are
Participant observation: observing without arousing attention, and fitting in the surrounding and the
Expectancy effects: expecting one thing to be another that it really isn’t (example of the kids
playing, expecting their actions being bullying when it reality it isn’t.)
Inter observer reliability: having a consistency of the observation made in between the two
observations made to make sure it is balanced and true.
Experiment /experimental method: it is used to find that the cause of the situation. The
experimental manipulates some variables and controls others. You can infer a cause and affect
