Document Summary
Chapter 6: definition: relatively permanent change in behaviour that results from experience, 3 types of learning, classical conditioning (pavlov, watson) example: tv ads (figure 6. 4) Neutral stimulus (rabbit) acquires capacity to evoke a response (fear) originally evoked instinctively to something else (loud noise: operant conditioning (skinner) Behaviour modified through reward or punishment: observational learning (bandura) Learning by watching: classical conditioning, pavlov: experiments with dogs. Conditioned response (cr): salivation: watson"s famous case. Human beings were constrained by genetic inheritance > watson disagreed > Human being were shaped solely by their environment . Fears are learned not inherited, they are conditioned watson. Creation of behaviourism: two-process theory of phobic reactions (figure 6. 3) Snake phobia can be cured in brief treatment (3 hours) Exposure therapy: (i) exposure to feared stimulus (ii) therapist provides skills necessary for relaxed and effective coping: operant conditioning (skinner: law of effect) Reward behaviour is most likely to re-occur.
