Document Summary
Machine picks up electrical activity of brain and puts it on a graph. Characteristics of wave forms: wave amplitude, wavelength. Stages of sleep: stage 1 (nrem 1): stage that we enter when we first start drifting off. Hypnagogic state: stage 2 (nrem 2): sleep spindles and mixed eeg activity. Sleep spindles are the sharp waves that are shown on the eeg lasts about 20 minutes: stage 3+4 (nrem 3+4): deep sleep that results in difficulty waking the person up. Stage 3 has delta waves that occur <50%, stage 4 delta waves occur >50% of the time. Wave sleep (sws: stage 5: rem sleep: rapid eye movement, rapid eye movements is a characteristic of this sleep. Experimenters woke up subjects during this stage and asked what did you experience before i woke you up? - they were dreaming. In rem the dreams are vivid and animated, emotional, and weird. Motor activity is practically eliminated, muscles are paralyzed.
