Document Summary

Memory (modules 23 to 25) - (cognitive perspective) Cognitive perspective was derived from the behavioral perspective. Stresses s-r relationships and believes that these are stamped in. Thinking processes are not required to understand behavior. When you encounter a particular stimulus, that activates a part of the brain that reacts to that stimulus. A physical connection is established in the brain when a response to a stimulus is reinforced. When the person encounters that stimulus in the future, the response will be automatic. Cognition is between the s & r. These processes will determine how you will respond. Even animals engage in cognitive processes that help determine their behavior. Believed learning was just trial and error. Kohler argued that there was more to learning than that: cognition takes place. Kohler argued that these monkeys developed insight: the a-ha phenomenon. Insight: the sudden understanding of how to solve a problem as a result of reorganizing the problem.
