What is a group? collection of people that fit together more or less strongly because of common bond or common identity cohesion (common bond -people come together for shared interest or needs)(common identity- people with similar characteristics) The more people have in common, the more cohesive the group is said to me. Allow us to predict how people behave in certain situations, who we are, what we believe in, social identity theory says we increase in group bias(positive thoughts to own group) This determines our own social identity as we have something to compare with. Groups last longer than individuals, ease mortality concerns they may not be around but group will. Helps to social interactions run smoothly when conflict arises. Based on trust, when trust is present group can achieve larger goals. Cooperation likely to take place when social norms is in a persons immediate context, personality traits influence competitive strategies, culture influences.
