Basic = not concerned with the real world laboratory vs. field. Advantages of field = more ecological validity - they are behaving how they normally would - real world phenomenon. Advantages of lab = can be controlled and manipulated. Relation = results we get in the lab does not tell us much about the real world (field research) But, 14% of effects changed sign from lab to field. Substantial variability depending on sub-field of psychology: studies demonstrating small effects, studies on gender differences. Numbers = quant. (ex. heart rate, height in inches) Any other type of data = qual. = tends to provide more detailed info rather than quant. Advantages/disadvantages are hard b/c you have to come up with a coding scheme in order to turn qual into quant.
