Document Summary

Looking at what happens after a baby is born. When we study major developments it is the physical & motor skills. Do a physical assessment (apgar is most known but there are other kinds) Is this a direct effect of low birth weight or do parents treat them differently: so if there is a problem, want to assess them. Apgar exam: measures heart rate, respiration, muscle tone, skin colour and reaction to mild stimulus. Prechtl test: similar to the apgar but also assess reflexes, facial expressions, alertness, etc. Measured on a 0 to 10 scale. Assessed at birth, 5 minutes, and sometimes at 20 minutes. Generally if the score is at 4 or lower, they are at risk. Refer to chart shown in lecture: know the types of tested conducted here. Lower scores don"t predict physical growth and developmental at 6 months of age: but a low score is predictive of growth at 4. 5 years.
