PSYC 2120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Plastic Surgery, Social Construction Of Gender, Masculinity
Document Summary
Gender is our identity, while sex is biological. Women"s performativity is that they are passive, quiet, caring, materialistic, etc. It is binary, because typically men"s performativity is the opposite. Hegemonic masculinity: the powerful norm/ standard for men is muscular, competitive, less emotional, authoritative, risk-takers. Hegemony, whether it is masculine or feminine, is the cultural norm/standards of behaviour and personality of that gender. These are ways we use gender to oppress and exploit others. Hegemonic masculinity: aggressive, homophobic, to be more masculine means to be less feminine. The media shows us the norms of a very white, able bodied, heterosexual culture. The ideals and norms that we have are re ected back to us in the media, which is where we go to see ourselves in our culture. Across different groups, gender is performed differently: straight men are now challenging norms of masculinity by being more fashion forward (which was typically seen as being something gay men would do)
