People construct an understanding of reality = gestalt psychology. Mind filters and select which info it takes in. We make choices, conscious or unconscious in social world. Filter out information and reach decision when it is enough. 3 motives influence choice: need for accurate knowledge get right info & understanding to reach conclusion. Strive for truth, especially when it has consequences: need for non-specific closure we need a conclusion/ decision. 2 ways to think about social world: experiential system unconscious, intuitive, automatic system of thinking (from old brain/limbic system, cognitive system conscious, rational, controlled system of thinking. (high level thinking/ new brain) Strange case of facilitated communication where facilitators helps autistic people communicate by steadies their hands to hunt for words on keyboard. It turned out that the facilitators were unconsciously writing their thoughts instead of those of autistic people. Heuristic mental shortcuts/ rule of thumb for fast decision making.
