PSYC 2120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Social Proof, Chameleon, Autopilot
Document Summary
Conformity: a change in behaviour or beliefs due to the real or imagines inluence of other people. Social norms: the implicit or explicit rules a group has for the acceptable behaviours, values, and beliefs of its members. Chameleon efect: the non-conscious mimicry of the postures, mannerisms, and facial expressions of one"s interaction partner. The chameleon efect: chartrand and bargh 1999: students interacted with a confederate. They thought they were to evaluate ads in a magazine. Half of the students got a confederate who would rub their face constantly or shook their foot. They wanted to see how many students would do the same. Most people do not engage on the chameleon efect consciously. We want to mimic so the other person will like you more. We believe that if we mimic the other person, they will like us more. Some repeated their order back and others didn"t.
