Somatic symptom disorder - the criteria has changed - more severe representation. If somebody was to be diagnosed with his they have to have one or more bodily complaints that result to significant destruction in life. Extended history of physical complaints before age 30 - much broader category and more people can fall into this - dsm 4 - four pain symptoms, 2 gastral intensity symptom, one sexual symptom, and conversional. All at the same time- it might change. Substantial impairment in social or occupational functioning in the severe presenion. Concerned over symptoms themselves, not what they might mean - typically it is not about the diagnosis. Symptoms become the person"s identity - it"s really all they talk about and they are consumed by it - there is no physiological reasons for what is going on. Rare condition: <0. 5% of population (severe presentation) More frequent among: women, low ses, patients in medical treatment.
