If you"re late for a test you rush and apologize and wait for test copies. If you"re late for class you don"t rush as hard and don"t apologize. Norms are emergent --> meaning they have to start from somewhere, which means people have to start it. Norm ex. at york 3hr long classes, other schools, not the case. Has to be consensual: people have to formally or informally agree. Prescriptive: preferable --> positively sanctioned (saying thank you upon receiving a gift) Proscriptive: prohibited --> negatively sanctioned (someone sticks their hand out and you don"t shake their hand) Descriptive: how people typically act, feel and think in a given situation. -> if you"re at a gym, people running and wearing sports clothes. -> if you"re at a campus and people walking around with laptops and bags. What would you do video: people jogging, taking dogs out for walks (typical, general)
