Part of the brain that deals with physical pain is activated with emotional pain- right prefrontal cortex and limbic system (thalamus, amygdala, anterior insula, anterior cingulate) Various stress hormones are released (norepinephrine, adrenalin, dopamine, cortisol) Self esteem is not an indicator of self worth but warns of possible exclusion. Certain needs have priority over others: human needs organized; arranged most basic personal and advanced needs. Lower needs must be met first or higher needs cannot operate: physiological needs-hunger/thirst, safety needs- need to feel world is organized and your safe, secure and stable, belonging and love needs- need to love and be loved. Belong and accepted: esteem needs- need for self esteem, achievement, and independence. Recognition and respect from others: self-actualization needs- need to live up to ones fullest and unique potential.
