Lecture 28
o How were mirror neurons discovered?
Found on either side of the head.
Entirely by accident in Parma, Italy.
Working with monkeys
Had peanuts in front of them and every time a monkey
reached for it, the neuron fired.
Whenever a human walked in and grabbed the same
peanut, the neuron fired in the monkey.
The neuron couldn’t tell the different between doing
something and watching it being done.
The neuron fires when the monkey grabs the peanut and
when the monkey watches someone grab a peanut.
o What is the function of mirror neurons?
They “mirror” the movement or action you’re seeing in
the brain.
