Description
Environmental crisis caused people to alters and change minds into pessimistic ideas in response of current situations AP Social Science 1000 9.0A Dongseok Gang 212428884 Farzad Shahinfard Tutorial number: 16 Submission Date: March 20, 2014 Environmental crisis is one of most concerned issue around the world for decades. 1 Due to ungovernable using of fossil fuels, deforestation, using chemicals, and throwing chemical waste from the factory caused disturb of environment and triggered global warming. As a result of global warming, the global temperature is increased, desertification, and shortage of fresh water. To overcome this situation, people try to change alternative energy over fossil fuels. As time passes, scientists and people divided into two groups of thinking differently about environment, pessimist and optimist. Environmental pessimists argue that the environment is beyond the Earth to self-recover because we, human beings use immeasurable natural resources as they are infinite. They insist the earth is facing an environmental crisis on a scale unprecedented in human history. This crisis is already responsible for high levels of human suffering and, if it continues, risks the extinction of human life on the planet. However, fifteen hundred leading scientists have confirmed conclusion: “The earth is finite. Its ability to absorb wastes and destructive effluents is finite. Its ability to provide food and energy is finite. Its ability to provide for growing numbers of people is finite. And we are fast to approaching many of the earth’s limits . On the other hand, optimists argue that countries and scientists are improving dramatically in the in technology and access to knowledge have led to increase awareness of environmental issues 4 and increasing ability to protect environment . Environmental crisis alters persons as not only individual problem but as globally but still most of human activities damage on ecosystem due to developing of technology, ignorance from economic globalization, and absence of ethics and responsibility. The Industrial Revolution is triggered to fast start for development of technology but on the other hand, it also triggered an environment disruption. Before the Industrial Revolution, people thought the natural resources were plentiful or could say unlimited, there were fewer people to use of resources, and they were materially less well of. Industrial 2 Revolution allowed world to access to the unlimited natural resources as they seemed and constructing an economy that demanded ever increasing supplies of all resources. Therefore, the Industrial Revolution transformed natural resources based on factories, cities, and 1 consumer goods . Factories create all sorts of things uncontrollably that are not really necessary. Many products are overproduced more than our demands and many products get thrown away to waste lands enough to disturb ecosystem. Unfortunately, people are not aware or aware of their actions which ruining the ecosystem we are currently living in. The lives of many were greatly improved thankful to technology, but the expense of the environment has increased dramatically. The rate and extent of environmental degradation is far in excess of anything people had imagined before. Frogs are disappearing form the face of the earth at an inexplicably rapid rate that breaking down from a lower levels of animal kingdom. Recycling aluminum cans in the company cafeteria and ceremonial tree plantings are about as effective as bailing out the Titanic with teaspoons . However nowadays, industry extracts, burns, and disposes of over four million pounds of material each year to meet the needs and desires of a middle-class American family. This excessive of use of natural resources is unsustainable and endangers our prosperity. The Industrial Revolution was just start to destruction, the technology afterward made ecosystem to crumble down. The technology development negatively affected on ecosystem that created such amount of waste and destructed or fastened on climate change. Fresh water will dry up within thirty to forty years ate present rates of extraction; globally we lose 25 billion tons of fertile topsoil every year. These are occurring while the world population is increasing at the rate of 90 million per year. The land, water, air, and sea have been functionally transformed from 3 life-supporting system into repositories for waste . Many industries in developing countries make the decisions of firms that compete each other in the free market are not guided by 3 environmental considerations. They can produce more cheaply when they dispose of wastes 1 in the cheapest way, such as in the nearest river . Furthermore, the emission from factories, cars, and everywhere caused serious climate change and smog especially in China. As a result of emission, the greenhouse gas effects are happened and continued to desertification. Lomborg explains the emissions of virtually all local air pollutants have fallen steadily in the developed world over the last 30–40 years. Lomborg provides emissions and concentrations trends for the UK and the USA for lead, particulates, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and carbon monoxide, and concludes that air quality in these countries has significantly improved as using natural clean powers . However, it is not really noticeable change to recover from wracked ecosystem. The data covered by Lomborg only affected on developed countries especially Europe. Many developing countries still emitted greenhouse gases. This over producing emissions, waste, and products were happened due to acceptance of responsibility and ethics. The activities that overproduce, throw away the waste and other similar activities that ruin the environment are happened as a result of absence of ethics and responsibility. Ethics hold that we have a duty to allocate and use resources to ensure the common good. In using natural resources we also have a duty to give moral consideration to future generations. If we do not accept these duties, our future generation would pay for our greedy actions because of depleted resources. Without replacement, the future will be feared that someday the resources will be depleted and cause chaos. Yet, people do not consider their behaviours. The discipline of environmental ethics took off in the 1970s, in response to the environmental movement protesting air and water pollution. Ethical arguments in support of laws to protect the 1 environment initially emphasized the government’s duty . Environmental activists argued that single individuals cannot be affected to protect environment effectively so the government 4 should lead the way. Furthermore, the pollution started to threaten to the human health, so government should be more considered. They argued that reducing pollution or taking other actions to preserve the environment are justified because nature has moral worth, not because 1 of benefits, but the main path of moral philosophy . They also argued that our actions may negatively impact on other organisms but have no duty to these organisms to suffer. Since, our environmental crisis arises from a conflict between the world of human culture and the world of nature, our way of life is the problem, and thus also our only solution . The step form ecology to ethics is inevitable, David Keller and Fran
