Document Summary
Argues that everyone starts off in the aesthetic stage. Childlike stage with a constant search for pleasure. Intellectual aesthete, and intellectual is often a spectator in life. The self chooses to be ethical, you choose and commit yourself to take responsibility for your own actions. The fundamental choice is to be ethical as such. You sum up the courage to choose to exist and to put your self under a law, give yourself the ability to say no. Here we have to make choices which go beyond human moral law and christian ethics, to go beyond the ethical and the religious suspension of the ethical. Faith is an utterly terrifying choice because you have to trust unknowingly. The truly religious person has to go beyond the law and the ordinary moral code. For kierkegaard the individual id always more important than the universal. These stages are fluid and a person can progress and regress through each stage.
