The nature of the super ego is irrational. For freud, we"re talking about an id. Some of them are repressed and some resurface. You can be guilty about a desire all the time. Many of his patients were suffering from excessive levels of guilt. He was speaking about someone who"s limbs were paralyzed for no reason. These symptoms would show up sometimes during their first menstrual cycles. Sexual desires produced crippling amounts of guilt for these women. Their limbs would no longer obey their will. There are various ways of dealing with guilt. Another way is the remove the aggression one feels to themselves, move it outwards, external aggression. Sublimation is in some sense taking that desire and expressing it in a culturally dismissible form. A kind of energy coming from desire. Society is held together by desires, not by a contract or norms. Eros: love, one loves one"s mother, friends, family, country.
