Civilization: process servicing eros (purpose is combining individuals, families, races, nations into great unity of mankind) Struggle between eros and death is what life consists of. Aggression is introjected/internalized towards own ego where it came from. Becomes super-ego which acts on aggression against ego which causes guilt and need for punishment. Guilt/sinful: when done something they know to be bad. Individual must have motive for submitting to this external influence dependence on authorities; fear of love loss. Authorities may exert their superiority thru punishment what"s (cid:271)ad is whatever will threaten loss of love. Can do things if kept hidden from authorities. Small children with adults, adults with larger human community. Changes as authorities is internalized thru establishing super-ego. Super-ego has no motive to hurt ego but torments sinful ego with anxiety, watches for opportunities for punishment.
