Fundamental structure of the mind is the id (it does not have logic, sense of identity or adaptation to external reality) Demands of reality as delayed gratification the reality principle. Freud says that reason is rationalization (relation between the id and external reality) Self preservation is not an instinct its calculated on part of the id. The superego is internalization of dominant values. Part of ego asks what one should do or ought do. Ego has unconscious portion which what be part of superego, which freud calls. The ego wants to fulfil demands of id and superego and external world. What we are our responses to external reality. Freud states that everything we do is a choice (how we respond is a choice) this is where our responsibilities come from. Construction of dream weakness ego and results in capacity of repressed material to come out in various ways in a dream work.
