Document Summary

Someone who is accepting of mental health services. He/she may agree that the system needs reform toward a client-centred approach, but also agrees that services are needed. Social and cultural de nition of a consumer = a purchaser, shopper, someone that uses/eats something. Both de nitions work to represent totally di erent concepts. The psychiatry term consumer may represent individuals shopping for what they deem helpful to them. Consumer instead of patient indicates a choice in the system (mad matters 87) Patient or person with a mental illness = stigmatized. Dependent on what the individual wants to be labeled as. Consumer gives the individual power over the decisions made for his/her mental health. Ex-patient or ex-inmate = somber + taken advantage of. Person with mental illness and patient are more impersonal. Mad = once a bad label, but recently reclaimed by the community much like the word queer in the lgbtq community. Think about the medical model and recovery model.
