Consumer: (lecture 2) the word consumer as defined in psychiatry, is a person/patient who has a mental illness, that is acquiring (consuming) treatment for their mental illness. Argued that medical community does not want to help the individuals, but to make a profit, creating drugs with harmful side effects. 19th to 20th century changes: (lecture 3) psychiatry in the early 19th century has significantly grown and evolved since its humble and at times embarrassing beginnings. Individuals who had developmental or mental disabilities were segregated, labeled and essentially treated like outcasts. They were taken from their homes and treated in government insane asylums, houses of the mad and mental wards. Patients of the toronto facility were forced to unpaid hard labor during the days to build a wall that would insulate and isolate them from the general public, essentially living in filth while typically suffering physical and emotional abuse.
