Document Summary

The location where fat is stored on your body has implications for that person"s overall health. Specifically, body fat distribution is an area of particular concern for the overweight or obese individual. Fat is typically stored in two areas: the abdominal region and the hips and thighs: excess abdominal fat is known as android obesity. A high level of abdominal fat is an independent risk factor for disease and tends to characterize a high level of fat around the internal organs. This fat appears to move more readily into the bloodstream and raises levels of harmful cholesterol. Men and post-menopausal women tend to store fat in the upper regions of the body, particularly the abdomen. There are many methods for measuring and classifying your weight and body fat status, each having specific benefits and liabilities. The body mass index (bmi) is a tool for assessment and classification of weight status: underweight, normal weight, overweight and obese.
