Android Obesity: Excessive abdominal fat
Anorexia Nervosa: An eating disorder characterized by extreme fear of
gaining weight and use of extreme measures to avoid weight gain
Binge Eating Disorder: An eating disorder in which sufferers eat unusually
large amount of food in very short periods of time and feel out of control
during the binge
Body Composition: Ratio of fat mass and fat-free mass in the body
Body Mass Index (BMI): An assessment tool that provides relatively
simple classifications of weight status based on from the ratio of weight to
height
Bulimia Nervosa: An eating disorder characterized by eating a large
volume of food in a short amount of time (binging) and then attempting to
prevent weight gain by ridding themselves of the food (purging)
Caloric Balance: Balance of calories consumed and calories expended
Calorie: Any of several units of heat defined as the amount of heat required
to raise 1 g of water 1°C at a specified temperature; the calorie used in
chemistry and biochemistry is equal to 4.184 joules. Abbreviated cal.
Diet: The food and beverages normally consumed by an individual
Essential Fat: Body fat that is necessary for normal bodily function and
includes lipids incorporated into nerves and organs
Exercise: Planned activity that utilizes large muscle groups in a repetitive
manner with the specific aim of maintaining or improving fitness and health
Gynoid Obesity: Fat accumulation in the hips and thighs.
Non-Essential Fat: Body fat that is not necessary to support normal body
function and is found primarily in adipose tissue (fat cells)
Obesity: An increase in body weight beyond the limitation of skeletal and
physical requirements, as the result of excessive accumulation of body fat.
Overweight: An excessive amount of body weight that may come from
muscle, bone, and adipose tissue
Physical Activity: Any bodily movement that increases energy expenditure
above the resting level
Subcutaneous Fat: Adipose tissue (fat cells) located just below the skin
Visceral Fat: Adipose tissue (fat cells) located in very close proximity to vital
organs in the abdominal area
