Document Summary

Vygotsky language has an internal function (thinking) & an external function. Sapir-whorf hypothesis: the mental universe in which people live is determined by the language they used. Different languages - different range of concepts to use to think & communicate about the world. Regulating the words we use does not change the thoughts we have: Yugoslavia program to stop ethnic hatred; communication was controlled towards this aim; but once the regulation collapsed, people started killing each other (i. e. thought was not controlled) Words have meanings that are approximate/ambiguous (not precise) These meanings can change over time & are dependent on context. People use jargon to establish a social group"s identity through communication. Students used jargon to communicate ideas through the ingroup. Pragmatics: study of how language is used in particular situations. Disqualification: vague & meaningless verbal communication is used in situations of conflict; use language to distance yourself from the situation.
