Young people whose group of friends engages in risky behaviours are more likely to engage in such behaviours themselves. Social norms- implicit or explicit rules a group has for the acceptable behaviours, values, and beliefs of its members. Students lied bc they were afraid of the consequences of ratting on their friends. Asch line studies- the answer is clear, seven people there, 76% of people conformed and gave an obviously wrong answer on at least one trial. Conformed on about 1/3 of the trials on which the accomplices gave the incorrect answer. Japanese researchers have developed a way to test this without confederates- groups of actual participants are given glasses that make the lines look longer or shorts. If replicating the asch study, one participant is given diff glasses than the others, thus, for this person the lines actually look different than they do to the rest of the group.
