Competent communication is communication with others that is perceived to be both effective and appropriate in a given context. Avoids violating social or interpersonal norms, rules, or expectations. Appropriateness is not in the words, but in how the words (cognitive) and actions (behavioral) are used in the context of communication. Communication competence (ability) vs. intelligence (fixed state: knowledge, skill, motivation (goals, judgement. Objective of conclusion: direction, overview, need, excitement. Fake news- made up messages with an intention to deceive. But has become a political battering ram and the definition of fake news has blurred. Initial credibility- credibility by the way a person looks and everything they have done before they speak. Presentational aids: your aid is not the main attraction, your aid cannot function without you, a bad aid is worse than none at all, you should never have to apologize for a presentation aid. Increase comprehension: auditory vs visual, complex processes.
