JOUR 601 Lecture Notes - Lecture 65: Civic Journalism
Document Summary
This is the process or reasserting objectivity as the core ideology of journalists when the ideology has been critiqued by people who are unobjective journalists. Repairing objectivity paradigms deals with reassuring the public that something that went against the norms of neutral and unbiased reporting was a one-time thing and the norms are still there despite the hiccup. Each story in news is a product of a decision set on what to cover, how to do it, and what needs to happen to show the values and routines of those making decisions. Similarities among those who have similar occurrences says a lot about the shared journalism culture instead of the objectivity of the individual accounts. This has created problems of image for journalism. Reporter"s detachment can be seen as them being indifferent or disengaging. Proponents of this journalism say that instead of only writing about problems in a community, journalists should try to help and find solutions.
