The public is better served when they have many journalistic versions of what happened during an event. Competition is supposed to keep people on their toes and incentivizes good reporting. They dislike the term even including those who make up the pack. Pack journalism describes a group of journalists when they cover a big story in masses. This is how the public views the term as well. A solution to this is addressing the dislike from the public for pack journalism. A way to fix it is distancing yourself from the crowd journalistically, not necessarily physically. This means writing about the pack like you"re not a part of it. This lets them acknowledge the fact that the media has become a part of the story without crossing professional boundaries that violate what reporting should be and what should be a part of the story.
