Social context influences how we think as well as what we think about. Vygotsky viewed it as foundation for all higher cognitive processes. Helps guide behavior: used more when tasks are difficult, after errors, or when confused. Gradually becomes more silent: children with learning and behavior problems use longer. Zpd: distance between a person"s actual developmental level as determined by independent problem solving, and the higher level of development that could be achieved under the guidance of an adult or more knowledgeable other (mko) Lower: reactive attention, associative memory, sensorimotor thought. Higher: focused attention, deliberate memory, symbolic thinking. A process in which two individuals reach a shared understanding of a work.
