Document Summary

Understand difference between standard and actual gibbs free energy change ( g and ( g" ) Slides posted for redox chemistry breaking into half reactions. Free energy (g) expresses the amount energy capable of doing work in a reaction. Negative = favorable, spontaneous reaction (still needs activation energy) Enthalpy (h) expresses the heat content of a reacting system. If you can take molecules and pulverize them, the amount of heat that comes out of them is the enthalpy. There is chemical energy within those molecules, and that is actually a ton of energy. If heat is released exothermic: change in enthalpy from reactants to products is negative. Entropy (s) a quantitative to mean the amount of randomness or disorder in the system. Sometimes these rules apply to the reacting system, and sometimes only to the system. The laws of thermodynamics apply to the universe, but for now, these only apply to our system.
