Document Summary
Lecture 11: enzyme binds best to the transition state. Transition always has the highest energy in a transition state: linus polly realized that it was not the lock-key format. There would be no reason for the substrate to go up to the transition state: go down in energy when 2 things that want to be together finally get together. Release of free energy: require cofactors. Organic cofactor: coenzyme (dissociable, prosthetic group (stays with enzyme) Many or most of the vitamins are organic molecules that factor as cofactors: required in trace amounts, most of the time, the vitamin has to processed in some way, enzymes can make reactions go insanely faster. Without the enzyme, a reaction will never happen fast enough to be relevant. Desolvation: when a substrate is floating around it has water molecules that go with it, water is removed when the substrate binds to enzyme or becomes product. Water is not a good a bond as the other.
