CSCI 1006 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Birds Eye View, Strobe Light
COMPOSITION (the arrangement of all the elements in a picture)
-Rules of thirds: placement of the horizon line in the upper or lower third.
-Background treatment: eliminate it. Simplify it. Include it in design as part of
photograph.
-Camera angles: Low worm’s eyes. High bird’s eye view. -
V. LIGHTING
-Light angles:
a) front light: 45 degrees Rembrandt. Not straight at object, deep
shadows.
b) side light: very dramatic. Whole body like dance.
c) backlight: main purpose is to separate object from the
background, give object dimension. Silhouette
created. Light also create the color of the background.
No light=black. Low light= gray.
Bright light=white
High Butterfly front light under the noise shadow.
-Highlight and shadow: very important to create, dimension!
-Ambient (aka continuous source light) light: existing light, already there, ie
daylight very hot
Daylight 5500 K Incandescent 3200/3400 K
Fluorescent 3000-5000 K
-Strobe light: flash: light that is created, in the camera, electronic light, freezes

Composition (the arrangement of all the elements in a picture) Rules of thirds: placement of the horizon line in the upper or lower third. Include it in design as part of photograph. Light angles: front light: 45 degrees rembrandt. Not straight at object, deep: side light: very dramatic. Whole body like dance: backlight: main purpose is to separate object from the shadows. background, give object dimension. Light also create the color of the background. High butterfly front light under the noise shadow. Highlight and shadow: very important to create, dimension! Ambient (aka continuous source light) light: existing light, already there, ie daylight very hot. Strobe light: flash: light that is created, in the camera, electronic light, freezes motion. Basic studio lights: key light: main light source, fill light: used with a fill card, light shines directly on one side, fill card reflects light back onto a subject, accent lights such as hair light.
