EESC1180 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Conchoidal Fracture, Covalent Bond, Chemical Formula
Document Summary
Minerals are the building blocks of rocks. They have an orderly internal structure of atoms. Glass on the other hand lacks internal order - like obsidian. Any naturally occurring solid mass of mineral or mineral like matter. A combo of one or more minerals. Bond multiple elements into crystals, use crystals to make minerals, boom minerals make rocks. Minerals must be created naturally, humans can make similar ones that are synthetic, but its not the same same. Single, continuous piece of a crystalline solid bounded by flat faces. Tend to be larger and take longer to cool. Smaller cool quickly or were constricted by leftover space, poor crystal faces. Naturally occurring, solids, with a definitive chemical formula and crystalline structure. Mineral crystals come in many shapes and sizes. Mineral properties both physical and chemical are tied to the types of bonds they contain. Streak: color of mineral in powdered form. Hardness: ability to resist scratching or abrasion.
