04.12 Organization
Organizing is a fluid, organic and emergent process where small moves build up to shape
different outcomes. In organizing, it is key to pay attention to what these small moves are and
how they put together
Where do organizations come from?
- We know a lot about organizations, but not as much about organizing--why?
- We increasingly find ourselves in situations where we collectively create something new
without the full knowledge of what we are creating.
Two Views on Organizing:
- Rational: organizations are for managers to design by a rational calculus
- Natural: organizations should be allowed to arise naturally as an improvisation of people
acting together. Group organizes itself through “play”
- “Play” i.e kids play with each other, sports, orchestras
What is Play?
- Not one activity, but a way of acting
- Acting with one another and against one another- is a cooperative contest,
competition is the sincerest cooperation
- Acting to create and confirm relationships: rank, responsibility, roles, division of
labor
- Characteristic mood of tension/excitement/fun
- Shared frame of reference
- Located space and time
- Bound by rules ( not all is fair in play)
- Unresolved possibilities ( something at stake- a score to settle, a position to be
won)
- Structured improvisation
- Being Alert and responsive to others
- Proactive agreements ( “yes...and…”)
- Convergence/ Closure
- Takes ideas/activity to logical conclusion
- Unite together behind the conclusion reached
Play Hypothesis:
- Social life is born, grows and develops as plays
- Organization is played: social relations, culture, systems and structure are what
play leaves behind
- How does play create organization?
