Between 1800-1900, all of africa except liberia & ethiopia was seized & occupied by european imperial powers. African independent states and polities were replaced by 40 artificially created colonies. By 1910: the colonial system had been imposed on virtually the whole continent. Colonies were administered by governors & officials appointed by european colonial powers. Economic factors: europeans wanted colonies to be their exclusive markets, wanted raw materials to feed their factories, needed a place to invest surplus capital. The number of colonies a nation had was a symbol of prestige. Because you were a great nation, you should sacrifice to raise others into civilization. A way to encourage the u. s to go out and participate in free. Social factors trade: colonies were a place to relocate surplus labor (unemployed people, europe should take civilization to other parts of the world, orientalism: tendency to flatten other cultures because of lack of understanding.
