1st Lecture:
The Euro-Centric World of the Early Twentieth Century:
the great power: UK, France, Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary and Russian empire.
All 6 had a monarchy of some sort. Except France which was a republic.
How is a great power defined? Economic status, diplomatic powers, military powers etc.
Nation: A community of people defining themselves with similar kinships, religions, interests
etc.
Russia claims to be different from all the other powers as they consider themselves Slavs.
Russia was the only Slavic great power in the world during that time. Russian diplomats came
up with the term “Pan Slavism”.
Nationalism and Diplomacy: Turks vs “Slavs”.

Russia, Austria-Hungary and Germany all defended the status quo and had an alliance which
was called the “Three Emperors League”.
But the Russians in the European parts didn’t necessarily think of themselves as Slavs or
Orthodox Christians. Austria- Hungary had the same problem.
