Document Summary
Motor neuron disease, a neurodegenerative disease characterized by the selective death/degeneration of upper motor neurons (in brain from motor cortex to brain stem) and lower motor neurons (in spinal cord from brain stem to body). Lower motor neurons found in ventral horn of spinal cord. Lateral: refers to the areas in a person"s spinal cord where portions of the nerve cells that signals and control the muscles are located. Sclerosis: scarring tissues in the affected nerves. Look of spinal cord: severe atrophy of anterior spinal roots. Eventually get both limb and bulbar deficits they merge. Later signs: weight loss, fatigue, exaggerated reflexes, decreased coordination, respiratory failure/ pneumonia: most common causes death, wasting: decreased neuronal activity, leads to decreased muscle activity, which leads to atrophy of the muscles. Cannot position arms correctly man in barrel and split hand when thumb out far from rest of fingers. Muscles that control eye movements and urinary sphincters are spared.
