CAS PS 473 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Abreaction, Cathexis, Observational Learning
Document Summary
Psychodynamic treatment: abreactive: cathexis- taking energy and attaching it to something for example a new phone. And you have this desire to get a new phone. When you get the phone it decathexis or catharsis. Life is a whole series of this: abreaction is catharsis in a therapeutic setting- you share something with someone and there is a release of energy, you feel a lot better. Models: stark model 1- you face your demons, model 2- you grieve losses and deficits, model 3-do for the self what was not done, self soothe, sadder and wiser. Behavioral and cbt: overview, behaviorism- pavlov, watson, thorndike, skinner, learned through experience with the environment, directly observable and measurable, operationally define- skinner, ret-rational emotive theory, forerunner to theory ellis, cbt- beck, meichenbaum, linehan (dbt, social cognitive theory bandura. Theoretical points: stimulus response model- all behaviors are learned, creatures of habit, importance of scientific approach-operationally define, treatment must be based on principles of learning.
