NY times article written by Cecilia Kang titled " Amazon lobbyists Ramp Up Their Charm offensive in D.C."
*** I need you to help me make my paper longer, by talking how this article relates to Microeconmics I wrote most of it here is my paper below , here take a look below in the quotes
Γ’ΒΒThe article mentions the dangers of Amazon eliminating competition and the issues of antitrust, public disclosure and privacy. The recent $13.4 billion purchase of Whole Foods has highlighted this issue of antitrust. This is the microeconomics issue, i.e. Antitrust, that the article is trying to address. Another way this article is tied to micro economics is that the marginal product increased a little bit initially , but as labor increased quantity of the the marginal product was decreaing, because of the the law of diminishing marginal returns. Also as more employees are hired to Amazon the total product is increasing initially, due to increasing return to scale. But due to more and more employees being hired to Amazon there will be too much labor and not enough product or output.
The main crux of the aricle is Amazon is becoming super power. It has become one of the companies which is driving the US economy by creating more jobs and job campaigns. Inspite of the criticisms that companies like Google or Facebook are facing for lobbying, Amazon has greatest number of lobbying expert staff, which is highest in the industry. Amazon is also helping smaller businesses gain value with their association with Amazon.
Amazon is using more aggressive approach, by building relationships with the leading politicians in order to improve the reputation of the organization. Earlier, Amazon had a no-frills operation where in, it always tried to poke government officials in Washington for issues like sales taxes and copyrights. Now, it is more into lobbying the most important people in the country to gain prominance and popularity. Last year Amazon spent $11.3 million last year (for four quarter). But this year, it is trying to surpass the last year lobbying figure. It spent almost $6.2 million for just quarters.
Amazon's strategic shift from a very reserved no-frills company to an aggressive company has happened when politicians got bolder in their criticism about the size and the influence it has on the big tech companies. And many politicians have a contention that Amazon is trying to catch hold of the power in the economy which might have a deep affect on the economy and the consumers in the long run.
Amazon has also decided in recent years to spend more money in the broader influence ecosystem of Washington. In 2016, Amazon gave more than $10,000 each to 66 think tanks, lobbying groups and political organizations. More than a dozen organizations were new to its sponsorship roster, like the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Foundation and the conservative Law & Economic Center at George Mason University.
Amazon is doing a wonderful job, it is actually helping small suppliers with a living, giving best of the prices to its consumers, and controlling the economy too. Amazon is no more a small company to be ignored. It is a giant organization, which can surpass any hurdles that come its way.Γ’ΒΒ
