Document Summary
Separated from natural condition by instruments of their own making. Sharing: giving to another, exchange with another. Creates a boundary for what is and isn"t communication. Comes from communis: duties together, 13th c. Together implies another; can"t be alone together. Mass communication (few to very many & always mediated) Mass media: we use a tool to reach a wider audience; the wider audience is not always exactly known. E. g. how many people watch a show (generally) Any representative of a thought, idea, concept, etc. Symbols don"t need to be big, deep, highly emotional to count . Non-verbal symbols (anything we say that isn"t actually a word) Do not require immediate or coordinating stimuli. Signs and signals are often interpreted symbolically by humans, Language is a collection of symbols governed by rules and used to convey messages between individuals. Language as culturally shared (as is all communication) Words people use tell you something about them (e. g. education level, geographic background, experience)
